How to read a pool heater rating plate
Copy the brand, model, serial, BTU input, and fuel from the heater rating plate before you order a part. Natural gas and propane are different heaters. Photograph the plate before you disconnect anything.

Where the plate is
Look on the outside of the cabinet, often inside the front door or on the side panel. The plate is metal or a printed sticker. Photograph it before you disconnect water or gas. A plate that faces the wall is harder to read once the heater is pulled.
If the plate is painted over or missing, the model is sometimes repeated on a sticker inside the door. Do not remove the burner cover to go hunting. Send what you can see through the contact form.
The lines that change the part
Brand, model, and serial identify the heater generation. BTU input is the size. Two heaters from the same brand with different BTU numbers do not share every gasket, header, or burner tray.
Fuel is the line people skip. The plate says natural gas or propane. A part listed for the other fuel is the wrong part, even when the cabinet looks identical. If you are matching a control part, write down the control voltage too, and leave the installation to someone qualified to do it.
Water side and the code
Headers and unions are chosen from the model, not from the pipe size alone. The pipe at the heater is commonly 1.5 inch or 2 inch. Measuring it is covered in how to match a replacement part.
If the heater will not light, the code on the display matters as much as the plate. The checks that are safe to do first are in a pool heater will not light. Heaters are in equipment.
Questions
What is on a pool heater rating plate?
Brand, model, serial, BTU input, and the fuel it was built for, natural gas or propane. Control voltage is often there too. A replacement part has to match those lines.
Are natural gas and propane pool heater parts the same?
No. The plate names the fuel. Parts for the other fuel are a different heater, unless the manufacturer lists a conversion kit for that exact model.
Where do I find the heater model if the plate is gone?
Check for a second sticker inside the front door. If neither is readable, photograph the cabinet and send it through the contact form. Do not open the burner area to search for a number.
